For Teachers and Administrators, K-3: Publication designed to explain the Reading First Assurances and share perspectives and success stories from educational leaders in California. It is a guidance document for all Reading First districts and schools within the state of California. It is to assist districts to define and implement the Assurances upon which the state's Reading First Plan is based. These Assurances "embody the research-based factors and conditions that have been proven to impact students achievement." Eight Assurances are addressed: instructional program, provisions for professional development, pacing plans & instructional time, curriculum-embedded assessments, collaborative dialogue, roles and responsibilities of the site administrator, and coherence with other school site programs. Two featured perspectives are offered on how these Assurances impact school reform and ten things learned about literacy initiatives—from a superintendent and from a district instructional leader. While specific to California, this document has potential usefulness for a broader reform audience on how to improve implementation of the Reading First program, and more specifically student achievement.
