Making it Work for English Learners
Five-Day Training
(This SB 472 ELPD training is designed for K-6 teachers who have completed the initial 40-hour AB 466/SB 472 training.)
This state-approved, 40-hour training addresses instructional strategies and current research to help close the achievement gap for English learners. Opportunities to practice strategies and research-based principles using state board-adopted language arts instructional materials are included.
Topics include:
- Establishing content and language objectives
- Examining the critical role of phonology in language development
- Addressing fluency challenges for English learners
- Supporting unique needs of English learners with vocabulary instruction
- Understanding the role of text structure in comprehension instruction
- Planning opportunities for oral and written production of academic language
- Studying the elements of writing component skills and composition that are challenging for English learners

This two-day training addresses instructional strategies and current research to help close the achievement gap for English learners. Opportunities to practice strategies and research-based principles using state board-adopted language arts instructional materials are included.
