What types of trainings are offered?
Five-day Institutes
120-hour professional development opportunity, in two phases for teachers from contracted districts.
Phase one is the intensive 40-hour (5-day) institute provided by a regional provider of professional training. The instructional content is program and grade specific and is offered for multiple levels.
Phase two is the 80-hour Follow-Up (Passport) program generally provided by each contracted district. After completion of the 40 hour training participants are eligible for an additional 80 hour follow-up. Districts/schools offer activities that make up the 80 hour follow-up. Each participant should check with his or her principal for information.
The Teacher Modules consist of short (1 to 3 hour) sessions designed to reinforce core knowledge and focus on topics addressing instruction in order to develop students' proficiency in reading and writing. The modules support the implementation of the core reading programs.
English Learner Professional Development
This 40-hour professional development provides teachers with effective instructional strategies to help close the achievement gap, presents current research on English learner issues, and practices the strategies and research-based principles using state board-adopted language arts instructional materials.
What are the training incentives?
Stipend Opportunity
Each participant who attends 5 Institute days on his/her own time (off-track/vacation) may receive a stipend issued by the district. Participant should check with the district for details.
The district will pay each participant who attends an institute while on-contract, in the regular manner as part of his/her regular workweek. No additional stipend will be issued.
If a session is missed, the participant needs to make up the session at a future Institute to be fully attended and eligible for an Institute stipend, a passport stipend, and for UCLA units. Make-up forms are available at the information desk. Note: there are no partial payments for partial Institute attendance.
Institute stipends are funded through the California Department of Education (CDE) or Reading First, and issued by the local district several months after institute attendance, or passport completion. Check with your district for payment updates.
