you qualify for more...
Your completion of a 40-hour professional development Institute and your completion of a 40-hour or 80-hour follow-up practicum, commonly called the "Passport" program, qualify you for more – earning and learning. Each completion makes you eligible for your district's stipends. In addition, each completion makes you eligible to expand your learning through UCLA credit, post-graduate level courses.
PASSPORT
The additional 80 hours is also commonly called the "Passport" program. Completing that additional work makes your district eligible for reimbursement from the state and could make you eligible for an additional stipend, depending on your district's policy.
UCLA EXTENSION CREDIT

The post-graduate courses are customized to meet your continuing professional development needs. For each series of courses, 2, 4, or 8 quarter units, eligible students may select from numerous course options. The designer of the courses served as a statewide leader in California’s initiatives for teaching elementary reading over the past decade. The courses are offered by exclusive arrangement between UCLA and the Reading Lions Center and the statewide consortium of Reading Implementation Centers (RICs), the same consortium through which you received your original qualifying Institute training.
Qualifying
If you took any of the following, you qualify for the UCLA courses:
- Any 5-day (40-hr) training after 1/1/2008.
- Fulfilling a 40-hour (with ELPD) or 80-hour practicum (Passport) after 1/1/2008.
- Attending a Teacher Modules Institute consisting of at least 4 modules.
For a complete description of eligibility, see the Eligibility Overview.
The instructor who designed these courses optimized them for maximum benefit for those with the foundation of prerequisite professional development institute for elementary reading/language arts teachers and coaches.
Units
You may earn 2, 4, or 8 quarter units of credit. Offered are three different 2-unit courses, seven 4-unit courses, and five 8-unit courses. The prerequisites differ and are outlined in each course description, but the basic combinations of trainings and the number of units for which they qualify are:
2 Quarter Units
- Completion of 4-6 Teacher Modules (16-24 hours)
4 Quarter Units
- Completion of a 40-hour (5-day) Professional Development Institute
- Completion of an 80-hour Passport
- Completion of ELPD 40-hour or 80-hour Passport
- Completion of 9-10 Teacher Modules (32-40 hours)
(NOTE:) The SB 472 English Learner Professional Development (ELPD) counts as any other 40-hour (5-day) training. Additionally, it is allowed to count as 40 hours of the 80-hour Passport. If it is used as part of the Passport, you are qualified to take a second 4-unit course; however, you are not eligible to take an 8-unit course.
UCLA Extension Quarters
These course offerings cover three UCLA Extension terms during this academic year. The term is based on when you want to participate in the course. Each term has its own submission and payment dates. Options 1 and 2 are tied to the 80-hour follow-up practicum (Passport). Options 1 and 2 terms have separate submission and payment dates. Your term or option choice will also determine your the section of the course you register into. UCLA Extension assigns each section a "Registration Number" that you will also need for registration.Term dates and deadlines:
- Spring (03/29/2008-6/20/2008) Assignments due: 08/01/2008
- Summer (06/21/2008-9/12/2008) Assignments due: 10/24/2008
- Fall (09/20/2008-10/31/2008) Assignments due: 01/23/2009
How the Classes Work
All of these specially designed UCLA courses are self-paced. The classroom is really your classroom. That's where the real work occurs. These courses are meant for teachers who are actively teaching and actively learning. You will be able to see the entire set of assignments in the course description. Assignments are submitted through the same CAM system through which you registered for your original training. You simply log in, paste in your written assignment, and click to submit.
Your instructor's assistant instructors will read and evaluate your work online. Their feedback is available to you as soon as it's entered. As soon as your grades are submitted to UCLA, you'll know it.
UCLA Extension's office and web site give you access to such services as transcript requests.
Riches and Fame Await You
Perhaps a slight exaggeration. Education typically does not have the budget of American Idol. Maybe America's Ideal Teacher someday?
Let's say you signed up for a year-one training in Houghton Mifflin Reading and you teach second grade. Here is one scenario of possibilities:
- A $500 stipend for completing your 40-hour training
- A $500 stipend for completing your 80-hour follow-up
- An additional 12 units of CE credit in support of your credential
- An additional 12 units of salary credits
Of course, each one of these is hypothetical, dependent on you, your choices, and your district's policies and budget. $500 is usually the stipend amount offered.
